How this site works
Every facility starts from CalRecycle's Solid Waste Information System (SWIS), the state list of permitted landfills and transfer stations. Hours, gate rates, accepted items and residency rules are then read from the operator's or the city's own page, and the exact words are stored with the link and the date read. Each facility page shows those sources.
A facility gets a page only when its operator says the public can use it (26 so far). Sites that take only commercial haulers, or whose public access we could not confirm, are left out rather than guessed.
The open-now line is worked out in your browser from the posted weekly hours in Pacific time. It does not know about holidays, rain closures or a full pit, so call ahead for a long trip.
Map points for cities come from the US Census Bureau 2024 Gazetteer; a few facility points come from the US Census Geocoder. Distances are straight-line miles.
